  • Still Singing Somehow by Rob Rideout (free download) ()
    Prologue from this fascinating book:

This book was inspired in prison. I wanted my son, long estranged due to divorce, to know the entire story; the why and the how that brought me to this place. In the process of writing, I discovered that I was really writing it for myself-to purge and forgive myself for the life I created. Sadly, my own compulsions sabotaged much of my life, allowing me to wallow in self-absorption and self-pity. Through years of laboring in rewrites, I have reviewed my life many times- maybe too many. The result has been a tremendous healing.

My story is one of fall and redemption, of heaven and hell. It’s about the pain of loss and the cop-out path I pursued for so long. If you're looking for something better than what you’ve seen on TV or already read, you might or might not find it here. But remember, the truth is always stranger than fiction. I couldn’t have thought this story up in my wildest imagination. Hopefully, anybody suffering from alcoholism or an overactive ego may find a ray of hope here. However, this book is without a hook; an inspirational memoir whose title alone will have to suffice.

My lifelong dream has always been to pursue a lifestyle of truth, simplicity and love. The road to that goal hasn’t been easy, and I realize that I paved it all myself. I had to lose everything to gain a freedom I never dreamed possible, but it was worth it, every step of the way. Many names in this journey have been changed to protect the innocent.

    Mantra: om dum durgaye namaha

    Yantra Meditation from Chopra Center:

As you look at the yantra, allow your eyes to focus on its center. This dot in the center is called the Bindu, which represents the unity that underlies all the diversity of the physical world.

Now allow your eyes to see the triangle that encloses the bindu. The downward pointing triangle represents the feminine creative power, while the upward facing triangle represents male energy.

Allow your vision to expand to include the circles outside of the triangles. They represent the cycles of cosmic rhythms. The image of the circle embodies the notion that time has no beginning and no end. The farthest region of space and the innermost nucleus of an atom both pulsate with the same rhythmic energy of creation. That rhythm is within you and without you.

Bring your awareness to lotus petals outside the circle. Notice that they are pointing outwards, as if opening. They illustrate the unfolding of our understanding. The lotus also represents the heart, the seat of the Self. When the heart opens, understanding comes.

The square at the outside of the yantra represents the world of form, the material world that our senses show us, the illusion of separateness, of well defined edges and boundaries. At the periphery of the figure are four T-shaped portals, or gateways. Notice that they point toward the interior of the yantra, the inner spaces of life. They represent our earthly passage from the external and material to the internal and sacred.

Now take a moment to gaze into the yantra, letting the different shapes and patterns emerge naturally, allowing your eyes to be held loosely in focus. Gaze at the center of the yantra on the page. Without moving your eyes, gradually begin to expand your field of vision. Continue expanding your vision until you are taking in information from greater than 180 degrees. Notice that all this information was there all along, you just became aware of it. Now slowly reverse the process by re-focusing back to the center of the yantra. Now gently close your eyes. You may still see the yantra in your mind’s eye. The patterns of creativity represented by these primordial shapes express the fundamental forces of nature. They govern the world and they govern you.

April 20, 1980 - after the evening aarati, Babaji spoke at length about the power of the mantra Om Namah Shivai. Some of his talk went as follows:

"I am happy that you are all on the way of religion. I am encouraged. As in past times, in certain parts of Europe there was a sincere adoration of fire."

Babaji then said "More than half of the people are oriented towards destruction" and went on to relate a story of how, at a time in the past (Mahabharata times), all the resources of Ravana's kingdom were used for the creation of a bomb so large and powerful that it was even more powerful than those we have today. Then some positive and creative forces got together and created something that would be even more powerful than this enormous destructive bomb. They created the mantra bomb.

"The mantra is still the only way."

Babaji then gave two examples of survival and said that those who use the mantra will survive in the same way.

First Example: When Lord Krishna was at a battle where everything was on fire, a locust came to pray at His feet. Krishna then placed His helmet over the locust. Everything on the field was burned and killed, except the locust, which survived under Lord Krishna's helmet.

Second Example: In a flour mill, all of the grain is ground up, just like people are in the destructive process. A few grains escape because they are near the center pole and fall down and away from the grinding wheel.

"I am happy that you are here. You should not waste your time while you are here. Have faith."

Aarati is a daily worship service performed to the Supreme Deity in the form of the Deity personified or to a statue, a picture, or other symbol of God. In this prayer ceremony, offerings are made of fire, incense, ghee (clarified butter), camphor, flowers, rice, sandal paste (chandan), vermillion paste (kumkum), water, etc.  In the temple worship, offerings to the statue, assumed to be a living presence of the Deity, are also made of a seat, ceremonial bath, clothing and food.

Fire plays a central role, symbolically removing the darkness of ignorance existing between God and self. Shri Shri 1008 Shri Bhagwan Herakhan Wale Baba, known as "Babaji" to his devotees, is the Divine Light who is worshipped.

The prayers appeal to His grace for fulfilment of all desires and to dispel the darkness of ignorance of the Self. He is recognised as the Supreme Reality personified: Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwara together, who performs the three functions of creation, maintenance and destruction of the universe. All their abilities and powers are united in Him, the Master, Lord, Creator, Protector of the universe, the Supreme Deity, Samba Sada Shiva, who has taken on human form for the salvation of the world. It is He who encompasses the entire universe, who is the Absolute Being permeating all things and creatures, who resides in the centre of the heart, shining like a bright, pure crystal, who is eternally omniscient, conscious and blissful, radiating joy, an ocean of grace. It is this Ultimate Divinity to whom the Aarati is offered and in whom the worshiper seeks refuge.

"Arati" literally translated means dispeller of darkness. By singing the songs of the Aarati devotional service, we are shedding light upon our darkness. In Sanskrit, darkness is the same word as ignorance.

The Haidakhan Aarati was cognised by the great saint, Shri Mahendra Maharaj. Mahendra dedicated his entire life to preparing the way for the reappearance of Shri Haidakhan Babaji. He travelled all over India for decades, teaching people the devotional service and establishing ashrams and temples dedicated to Babaji.

He unceasingly prayed to Babaji, begging him to return to the earth in physical form for the upliftment of humanity. Amazingly, in 1969 Babaji appeared to Mahendra and promised him he would take form, even showing him what the form would be. This word from Babaji satisfied Mahendra, and he died shortly thereafter, not even sticking around to experience the physical presence of Shri Babaji, thereby enjoying the fruits of his labours. He had performed this service for the benefit of others, not for himself.

Babaji did as promised and made Himself known about a year later, in 1970.

Shri Shastriji, when asked when Babaji will return again, has often said, When one of us has the devotion, dedication and commitment of Mahendra Maharaj. Is there such a person among us?

In Sanskrit, the vibration of each word matches its meaning. The words of the Aarati are a specific formula. The vibration of the Aarati transforms our own vibration to a level that is "in synch" with Babaji and brings Him to us. Our vibration gets closer to His and this makes it easier for Him to be with us. Those who want to experience more of Babaji's guidance and healing vibration have a formula to do that: the Aarati.

Even hearing the Aarati on tape, before memorizing it, will raise a person's vibration and be a great comfort. Once a person learns and memorizes the Aarati, to the point where the mouth keeps singing the next verse without even thinking about it, there is a wealth of information and problem-solving which happens during the Aarati, similar to what is experienced in the deepest of meditation. Divine Inspiration takes place, pictures come to mind about what the next step is for a project, and solutions to seemingly insurmountable problems appear. It is magical. The connection from the Superconscious (God Self, Inner Voice) to the Conscious Mind is opened and ready for action. Aarati is like entering the "Silence" that all religions mention, where God gets to talk to you instead of only a one-way communication.

Aarati is sung in each of Babaji's temples throughout the world in the morning and evening, just after sunrise and sunset. It is the perfect way to remove the veil of sleep in the morning and to lay to rest all the activities of the day in the evening. In spiritual community at an ashram, it is the 'glue' which holds the diverse group together. This makes it possible to work together even though there are bound to be personality differences.

To know yourself better, to clear the way for Divine Communication, to experience the healing of Shri Babaji's Presence, turn to Aarati, the dispeller of darkness.

This album is a collection of devotional songs, sung at Haidakhan Vishwa Mahadham, Sri Babaji's main ashram and place of reappearance in 1970. The collection consists of Kirtans and Bhajans. Kirtans are devotional songs containing the name, or aspect of the deity worshipped: Lord Shiva, the Divine Mother Amba, Hari-Lord Vishnu, Hanuman, etc. These are to be repeated as many times as one wants to. Bhajans are religious hymns, telling a brief story.

The Lord is given praise in all His glory, in His many forms and manifestations. The underlying theme is one of joy, gratitude and love. The supreme Guru, honored here, is Bhagwan Haidakhan as Shiva, manifest creator and destroyer of the universe, who is also invoked by 108 names, given at the end of this collection. The repetition of these names, or mantras, has been described by Shri Babaji as tarak mantra -- supreme mantra, to be recited daily.

Shri Babaji has commented on kirtan singing, saying: "Kirtan should come to you naturally, through your soul... You should sing devotional music in a way, that stirs the heart, in harmony and with a slow rhythm. Whenever you make music, singing or playing, it should leave a memory on the mind."

The mantra OM NAMAH SHIVAYA is the main mantra used in the chanting, and Shri Babaji has enjoined his devotees to: "Always repeat God's name. Whatever you do, wherever you are, repeat the name of the Lord ... OM NAMAH SHIVAYA is the original mantra. It is like nectar, feed everyone with this nectar ... When Mahashakti, the Primordial energy, first manifested, the words she uttered was the mantra OM NAMAH SHIVAYA." Repeating, or chanting this mantra will lead to total union with God.
